Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was required to halt operations for several hours when numerous of them floated into the national airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The temporary shutdown led to thirty canceled flights impacting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the airport's airspace.
Approximately 14 of the atmospheric instruments launched over the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's main urban center and adjacent to the frontier with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
At least 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
While creating issues, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
So far this year, 544 balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of numerous instances in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why criminals use a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather conditions rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to apprehend coordinators and perpetrators so that this activity become unprofitable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during a time of heightened tension in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have created aviation problems across European nations.
Similar occurrences in neighboring countries have led European authorities to fast-track conversations about strengthening air defences throughout the continent.
