The Film 'Together' Is Now Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Partnership.

Here's a dare for long-term couples who are fans of horror films: Sit down with your loved one and stream Together. The independent film success of 2025 has now made its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. On the surface, it might appear like conventional physical horror, but inside Together exists a intense meditation about how we choose to love each other.

A Debut Feature Investigating Partnership Complexities

Together marks the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It stars Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have been together for ten years. Married in actuality in 2017, the actors contribute a special spark to their characters, expertly portraying both the good and bad of a long-term relationship.

The story begins when the couple relocate from the big city to the country for Millie’s job. A somewhat stereotypical narrative setup, of course, but that’s mostly where the cliches end. Together becomes as much a psychological exploration of the pair’s relationship as it is a film about physical terror.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While walking near their new home, a storm hits, and the protagonists discover an underground cave. After a night spent there and finally finding a way out, a supernatural entity begins influencing the pair. This force induces a otherworldly bond between them that goes well past emotional intimacy.

The complete narrative is a methodically building of scares, weaving in bits of dreamlike terrors, gross (but not excessively graphic) biological grotesqueries, and genuinely funny exchanges (sometimes in the middle of something horrific). Shanks orchestrates these parts expertly and delivers them in a consistently growing atmosphere of fear.

Nuanced Portrayals

A great deal of Together is exclusively the performances of its stars, and they deftly portray countless layers to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Her self-assurance and feeling of intimacy is deteriorating due to a lack of intimacy. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his hesitance to focus on anything other than his struggling artistic pursuits gradually emerges.

Tim, on the other hand feels trapped and cut off by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve moved to the country and removed from his network of friends. He fears the concept of utterly sacrificing his personal autonomy in his partner. This fear is amplified by the reality he does not operate a vehicle and needs Millie for transportation.

Shanks’ smartest move in this movie never makes either of his characters the definite antagonist.

The couple grapple with the kind of problems that are inherent in most partnerships a decade in. Fundamentally, they still love one another. They still laugh together, provide solace, and share intimately at times. But below this facade, there’s an persistent undercurrent of doubt about their bond.

Thematic Depth

While the otherworldly presence in Together represent these fears of excessive reliance and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the metaphor avoids being overly obvious or pretentious. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments provide a perfect parallel to the character-driven drama. Both the supernatural and the personal serve the other in harmony.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s ending, which won’t be spoiled here, has sparked debate on the story's concluding statement about codependent relationships. It has been said that unattached audience members have interpreted the film as a compelling reason for remaining unattached. Conversely, some couples experiencing tension found that the film ultimately assisted them make up.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own response could potentially serve as a revealing measure of how you view relationships. Will the conclusion inspire anxiety and horror, or a positive outlook on love? Will you recognize your own traits in either protagonist and yell at the screen, or simply look at your significant other and say, “We could get through that together”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an experiment you can embark on at this very moment.

Together is available to watch on the streaming service Hulu as of this moment.
