An individual who contaminated candy with sedative and gave them to youngsters at a youth camp in the region has confessed to sexual offences against two children who were nine and 10.

Jon Ruben was detained after eight children and a grown-up became sick at Stathern Lodge in mid-summer.

The 76-year-old, from the Nottinghamshire area, confessed to a multiple criminal counts when he was present at the judicial center on the end of the week.

Yet, he denied one of the sexual offences he was facing, which was involving a nine-year-old boy.

The defendant was kept in jail prior to a subsequent court date on 28 November.

'Treat game'

Mary Prior KC, prosecuting, outlined the criminal behavior to the court.

She explained his victims were under-privileged children who were staying at a summer camp which he ran.

The man played a "candy game" with the youngsters, the legal counsel stated, in which he would enter the boys' rooms when they were preparing to sleep and tell them to consume candy "as quickly as they can".

She informed the proceedings the defendant had conducted this practice with the children "over an extended period", and minors had previously fallen ill the subsequent day.

She explained the defendant had been successful in rationalizing this for many years as the youngsters being "overwrought by enjoyment", until his family member had concerns in July 2025.

Mrs Prior KC stated further: "This year his stepchild had suspicions about the activities, justifiably.

"They chose" to have a look in the man's possessions."

The legal counsel stated items including infant oil, ointment and medical needles were located, and his family member notified the law enforcement about his suspicions.

She stated the man proceeded to play the "sweet game" with six youngsters that evening - July 26th - and they were all ill the following morning.

"Authorities" had not gone out by that stage," she added.

The oversight body, the investigative body, had stated that it was reviewing law enforcement's management of the events.

The legal representative said the children were struggling to walk due to their condition, so the family member called the law enforcement once more.

She said the man then engaged in the "treat game" in a area of five children.
