European Union Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States

The EU might “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the US against five Europeans involved in combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to enact legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the decision.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders contend the regulations are necessary to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.

This disagreement threatens to become part of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash between Washington and European institutions.

Other Developments in the News

In other legal developments:

  • A federal judge has halted attempts to cut security grants to states that do not comply with certain immigration enforcement policies. The official stated the case was “a further instance” of linking government assistance to policy compliance.
  • Authorization was issued for the dispatch of hundreds of national guard troops to a major US city ahead of the new year, alongside an active immigration enforcement operation.
  • A Pacific Island nation will consent to take in a limited number of individuals from the US in return for increased assistance, following concluding a memorandum of understanding with US authorities.

Additionally, a congressional representative has filed a lawsuit seeking the removal of the current president’s name from a prominent performing arts center in the capital.

Analysts point out that recent statements regarding Venezuelan oil align with a wider ideology in some quarters of “resource imperialism”, leading to parallels with past foreign policy strategies.
